Mary Katrantzou is calling from Greece. While the fashion designer is in fact from the ancient Mediterranean nation, she's not home for long. Having skipped this year's London Fashion Week in favor of a spectacular runway extravaganza at the Temple of Poseidon—an ancient ruin southeast of Athens that overlooks the Aegean Sea—she's now enjoying some well-deserved rest and relaxation. The subject of our call isn't however this homecoming, or nostoi, trip, but rather her collection of carpets for The Rug Company, which are out this month.
As the daughter of an interior designer and a textile engineer, Katrantzou was right at home when it came to embracing this newfound work. And while it proved nearly "impossible" to narrow down the capsule to six designs, the fruits of her labors clearly paid off. Below, Katrantzou speaks to AD PRO about the process, her inspirations, and renovating her new home.
AD PRO: The patterns used in these rugs come from fabrics in your own design archive... that sounds like a fantastic place!
Mary Katranzou: We’ve done countless prints in my 11 years in fashion. But I think it’s really different when you think about what will look beautiful in a home as opposed to on a female body. A lot of our fabrics are engineered to be flattering. One collection we did on nostalgia, that featured paint by numbers, was graphic and translated really well.
AD PRO: Greece, and its history, is so clearly fundamental to your identity and creative inspiration. Nostalgia is also a very Greek word.
MK: [Nostalgia] is always part of my narrative, and something I’m continuously trying to translate into prints. It is a very Greek concept, and also I think something that’s really fitting in people’s homes.
AD PRO: Throughout your entire career, you’ve been a champion for maximalism within fashion. Do you think its popularity is now spreading into design?
MK: I think design has become a lot more fluid. For me, it’s always been about crossing between disciplines—that’s part of my inspiration. I studied architecture, then I went into textiles, and then I into fashion, so often my work is about design in its own right.
AD PRO: So has making a rug collection been a homecoming of sorts?
MK: Yes. It’s interesting, people experience color differently from how they conceive of wearing it. It’s been a homecoming, but also liberating.
AD PRO: What is your personal interiors style like?
MK: It’s a difficult question actually because I’m renovating my home right now. I view it as I view the studio which is as a blank space and canvas. The flat I’ve lived in has white walls and wooden floors but I think it’s important to both bring in personality and have a space where you can relax. I’m very selective, though, everything needs to signify a personal attachment, which sort of goes back to that idea of nostalgia. The first thing that’s going into [my new apartment] though are these rugs.
AD PRO: So are you going to use all of these rugs in your new home then?
MK: That’s probably a conversation I need to have with The Rug Company, about of how many they can produce and how fast [laughs]... I know though that I will definitely take the pink sunray and at least one of the florals.
