Being a teenager can be tough — navigating school and friendships while trying to make your way to adulthood. In the case of Dinah Lance, she’s got an extra complication: discovering she’s inherited a superpower from her mother.
DC Comics presents “Black Canary: Ignite,” a new middle grade graphic novel written by New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot (“The Princess Diaries”) and illustrated by Cara McGee.
In the graphic novel, 13-year-old Dinah Lance is in a band with her best friends and has plans to follow in her dad’s footsteps to join the police academy. But when her family is threatened, Dinah finds out about her mother’s superheroic past and begins asking questions about her own future.
Longtime DC fans will find several winks to Black Canary’s past; younger readers who have grown up with Raina Telgemeier’s graphic novels of adolescence also should find some enjoyment here.
“Ignite” is one of several DC graphic novels exploring its well-known superhero characters through the lens of young adult and middle grade graphic novels.
Black Canary was created in 1947 in the pages of “Flash Comics” #86, where she later had a back-up strip of her own. She’s been heavily featured in the comic-book series “Justice League,” “Green Arrow” and “Birds of Prey.” She headlined comic-book series in 1991, 1993, 2007 and 2015.
She’s been featured in live-action TV series, including “Birds of Prey,” “Smallville” and “Arrow,” and is set to be part of the cast of the 2020 “Birds of Prey” film played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell.
