Durham, N.C. — A graphic artist is working to curb gun violence in the Bull City.
According to city leaders, homicides have increased by nearly 20% since last year, with 36 deaths reported in 2019.
Kasia Konopka said, while she loves living and working in Durham, the violence has hit too close to her Southside home where she lives with her husband and 3-year-old son.
"It has just been a been a little stressful recently," Konopka said. "We hear gunshots almost every day. There was a shooting literally two doors down a few weeks ago."
That Nov. 25 shooting resulted in the death of 29-year-old Jonathan Johnson.
To spur positive action, Konopka turned to her craft -- using powerful words and images to design posters she hopes will expose the violence.
"This is my voice," she said. "I very much believe in the power of art and design."
The graphic designer created posters showing a human target, a bullet and a gun.
One was created after an Oct. 19 drive-by shooting on Lyon Street that killed 9-year-old Z'Yon Peterson.
It reads: "What is 0.6 miles? A morning jog. A walk at the South Point Mall. Distance from The Museum of Life and Science to the corner of Lyon Street, where 9-year-old Z'Yon Person was killed in a drive-by shooting on August 18th, 2019."
"This is probably the most shocking one," Konopka said. "This is personally very shocking to me -- and very heartbreaking."
Konopka said she and her neighbors stand united against the violence and want to see progress.
"We talk to the city a lot," she said. "We don't necessarily feel heard."
Konopka said moving to a safer place isn't the answer for her family.
"Of course we could move, but the problem will exist," she said. "The problem will still be here."
Konopka intends to soon begin displaying her anti-gun violence posters as well as getting the message out through social media and other platforms.
