TEMPE, Ariz. - An Arizona State Trooper was injured and one person was left dead in a trooper-involved shooting that occurred Thursday evening in Tempe.

According to Arizona Department of Public Safety, a man, later identified as 25-year-old Mohamed Ahmed E. A. Al-Hashemi was approached by a DPS trooper after he allegedly knocked down a street sign into a roadway near Loop 202. When the trooper told Al-Hashemi to pick-up the sign, he allegedly refused and then ignore several of the trooper's commands.

DPS said after Al-Hashemi allegedly performed several displays of "erratic and threatening behavior", including charging the trooper’s vehicle, kicking its hood area and continuing to refuse the trooper's commands, the trooper attempted to use his taser.

After two ineffective deployments, the suspect allegedly attacked the trooper violently, putting the trooper "in a fight for his life." According to DPS, Al-Hashemi allegedly hit the trooper with fists, headbutt and full-kick strikes and knocked him to the ground multiple times.

Authorities said the suspect also took the trooper's taser and "hit him over the head with the weapon."

DPS said the trooper then made the decision to use his firearm, as he "began to feel a loss of consciousness" and felt he was in a situation of "immediate danger of death."

The shooting resulted in the death of Al-Hashemi.

The trooper involved was treated for injuries and was later released.

DPS said there was also a citizen observer in the trooper's patrol vehicle. The trooper attempted to radio the citizen for help, to no success.

The report also stated that he feared for the life of the citizen observer.

Al-Hashemi was said to be a Qatari national who was in the United States on a student visa.
