One traveler’s emissions agraphic view of our impact
Re: “Fly or drive over the holidays? Neither is good for the planet” (Mercurynews.com, Dec. 21):
Thank you for Lisa Krieger’s excellent report on the carbon-emission and global-warming effects of travel.
Her description of one traveler’s share of the emissions on a one-way flight from San Francisco to New York shrinking sea ice by “a truck-size piece of the Arctic” is graphic. Her advice regarding non-stop flights, greater efficiency from car travel and purchasing carbon credits is timely (there are also carbon offset providers such as NativeEnergy and Terrapass).
We must all do our part to reduce our carbon footprint, and individual actions are good. But collective efforts are more powerful, creating a real force for change. Citizens’ Climate Lobby attracted me with a positive, nonpartisan call for a price on carbon. Let’s all find a group that fits us and act now, while we still have time to save the planet.Anna KosterSan Jose
