Jurors this week will be shown surveillance video of a December 2018 attack outside a City of Tonawanda coffee shop that left a young mother "horrifically disfigured," according to prosecutors.
Jurors also will be shown police body-camera video that prosecutors said shows smoke coming from Jessica Cameron's body after she had gasoline poured over her head and was set on fire.
Opening statements in the trial of Jonathon E. White, charged with trying to kill his estranged girlfriend in an alleged case of domestic violence, are scheduled to begin this afternoon in State Supreme Court in downtown Buffalo.
White faces charges of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault.
A jury of six women and six men, selected Monday, is also expected to hear from White, who intends to testify in his own defense, said his attorney, Joseph J. Terranova.
Prosecutors warned jurors about the "graphic" and "disturbing" evidence that will be presented during the trial, in which Cameron is also expected to testify.
The attack happened at about 3:30 p.m. Dec. 17, 2018, outside the Tim Hortons at Niagara and Seymour streets in Tonawanda. Cameron was working at the coffee shop when prosecutors say White lured her to an area near the business' dumpster.
Surveillance video shows most of the incident, Assistant District Attorney Ryan D. Haggerty told prospective jurors Monday.
Jurors will see Cameron on the video running around "on fire," Haggerty said. After about 30 seconds, the man in the video – who prosecutors say was White – brought some snow over to Cameron as she burned, he said.
Cameron suffered burns to her face, chest and her hands. She lost almost all of her fingers because of the attack, Haggerty said. Cameron underwent several surgeries and was finally discharged from the hospital in April, according to a Facebook page documenting her recovery.
The prosecution is scheduled to deliver its opening statement at 1:30 p.m. Justice Mark A. Montour will preside over the trial. Assistant District Attorney Rebecca L. Schnirel also is prosecuting the case.
